The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
